A Roman Holiday: Exploring the Eternal City
As I entered the next chapter of my life over the age of 50, my adventurous spirit led me to embark on a journey from Dallas, Texas to the historic city of Rome, Italy. With Delta Airlines as our choice of carrier, my wife and I were ready to immerse ourselves in the rich culture, breathtaking architecture, and delectable cuisine of this ancient city.
Now, let me be honest with you—the food on the plane wasn't exactly a gastronomic delight. But hey, who goes on a trip for airplane food, right? After a brief layover at JFK Airport in New York City, we were back in the air, contemplating the ever-elusive art of sleeping on an airplane.
Upon arrival in Rome, we were pleasantly surprised by the relaxed and welcoming demeanor of the Customs Agents, which made the entry process a breeze. Eager to dive into the heart of the city, we hired a private driver who charged us a reasonable 80 euros to whisk us away to the vibrant City Centre.
Despite being awake for more than 24 hours, we mustered the energy to walk around, determined to conquer our jetlag. We strolled through the enchanting streets of Rome and caught glimpses of iconic landmarks like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and Trevi Fountain. Our official tours of these magnificent sites were scheduled for later in our trip, but we couldn't contain our excitement to witness the marvels firsthand.
Thanks to my wife's impeccable Airbnb selection, our accommodation put us within walking distance of all major attractions. It was a relief not having to rely solely on transportation and being able to explore the city at our own pace.
As our Roman adventure unfolds, we look forward to experiencing the city's vibrant energy, indulging in mouthwatering Italian cuisine, and uncovering the hidden treasures that await us around every corner. Stay tuned for more tales from the Eternal City as we dive into the heart of Rome's rich history and embrace the dolce vita lifestyle.
