A Relaxed Roman Escape: La Taverna Italiana
La Taverna Italiana
Ah, Rome! The Eternal City, the birthplace of pizza, and home to more pasta than you can twirl a fork at. Recently, my wife, her two teenagers, and I embarked on a gastronomic adventure in the heart of Italy. Our culinary journey led us to the unassuming yet charming La Taverna Italiana, a trattoria nestled in the streets of Rome.
We kicked off our evening with a bottle of Cesanese IGT Lazio, a red wine that flowed smoother than the Tiber River on a calm day. As we sipped and savored, our taste buds began to tingle with anticipation for what was to come. The Bruschetta Romana and Bruschetta al Pomodoro arrived, and let me tell you, they were the perfect opening act. The crunchy bread, the tangy tomatoes, and the fragrant herbs danced a heavenly tarantella in our mouths.
With appetites whetted, we moved on to the main event. We decided to share the Greca salad, a Mediterranean marvel bursting with freshness. The lattuga, pomodori, cetrioli, feta greca, cipolla rossa, peperoni, olive, and origano combined like a symphony of flavors. It was a salad fit for the gods themselves. To follow, we indulged in the Tonnarelli alla Pescatora, a dish that could make even Poseidon jealous. The delicate pasta swam alongside succulent seafood, bathed in a rich tomato sauce that transported us straight to the shores of the Mediterranean.
Inside the trattoria, it was a tad stuffy. However, we quickly made a strategic decision to embrace the cool evening breeze and opted for a table on the inviting patio. Nature's air conditioning worked wonders, and we found ourselves in the lap of Italian comfort. Our attentive waiters glided through the restaurant, delivering plates of culinary magic with a genuine smile.
Now, let's talk about the restrooms. Yes, even in a food blog, we must address this necessary topic. The restrooms at La Taverna Italiana are located downstairs. To wash your hands, you need to channel your inner Riverdance and step on a foot pedal to activate the sink. And when it comes to the soap dispenser, it's a bit like pumping iron—give it a few pumps, and the soap will flow like the Trevi Fountain.
As our delightful evening came to a close, we were left with a satisfied appetite and a bill that didn't sting. For four people, we spent around 100 euros, which is a pretty good deal for a dining experience in the heart of Rome.
La Taverna Italiana may not be the flashiest place in town, but it sure does serve up a mean Italian feast. So, if you find yourself wandering the cobbled streets of Rome, craving authentic flavors and a laid-back atmosphere, make a beeline for this trattoria gem. Your taste buds—and your wallet—will thank you. Buon appetito!
